Born Pakistan, 1969
Shazia Sikander lives and works in New York. She was schooled in the miniature painting tradition of Pakistan, and blends the historic iconography and technique with her own aesthetics resulting in a fusion of traditional and contemporary styles.
Sikander’s work underlines the tensions that exist in Islam, Hinduism and Christianity as well as her own personal history, politics, and sexuality.Sikander explores in particular, the role of Muslim women and challenges the view Westerners have of associating Islam only with oppression of women and terrorism.
Sikander is currently showing her first major solo exhibition at Ikon Gallery, Birmingham until 14 September 2008.
