With his ties to the growing punk and new wave music community, Fred Tomaselli was a pioneering artist of the Eighties’ ‘Downtown LA’ scene. Tomaselli’s paintings feature medicinal herbs, pills and hallucinogenic plants as well as images of butterflies and flowers cut out from books and magazines. These collages are sealed in resin and many layers of thin varnish.
His group exhibitions include ‘Open Ends’, MoMA, New York (2000), the Berlin Biennale (2001) and the Liverpool Biennial (2002) and solo exhibitions include Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, (1999), Palm Beach Institute of Contemporary Art, Florida (2001), Fruitmarket Gallery, Edinburgh (2004) and IMMA, Dublin.
